Hythe Town manager Steve Watt aiming to lead the Cannons into the FA Trophy Second Round for the first time in their history

Boss Steve Watt is looking for Hythe to make more history when they host Ramsgate in the FA Trophy First Round.

The sides meet at Reachfields on Saturday (3pm), with the Cannons looking to reach Round Two for the first time.

Having created history by reaching the Isthmian South East play-off final last season, the Cannons want to rewrite the record books again.

The club’s only previous appearance in the First Round, seven years ago, ended in an 8-1 defeat by Welling.

Watt makes his side underdogs against in-form Ramsgate who have reached the FA Cup First Round for the first time since 2005, meeting Woking next weekend.

But there’s nothing they enjoy more than upsetting the odds.

“Ben Smith (manager) has done a fantastic job at Ramsgate,” said Watt.

“He’s built a great team and they’re reaping the benefits.

“To make the First Round Proper of the FA Cup for the first time in 18 years is a great achievement.

“We’ll approach the game as we always do.

“We’re the underdogs but we’ll do what we do and try and cause an upset.

“I’ve played against Ben’s sides many times - both teams know what to expect - and I’m looking forward to a really good game.

“People might argue they’ll have one eye on the FA Cup but I don’t think they will.

“We know how professional they are and I fully expect them to give us the utmost respect.

“We’ve got to make sure we’re the better team and progress to a round the club haven’t been to before.

“We got to the play-off final last year, which was a first for the club, and this is a chance to get another first.”

Hythe drew 2-2 with Burgess Hill in Isthmian South East on Saturday.

Jake Embery and Ethan Smith scored three minutes apart as Watt’s side came from a goal down to lead 2-1 but the visitors grabbed a second-half equaliser.

“It’s the story of our season in terms of conceding goals we shouldn’t concede,” said Watt.

“We’ve let in two really sloppy goals.

“It was a tough game in difficult conditions - full credit to both sets of players.

“A draw was probably the fair result, albeit we’ve missed a glorious chance right at the death and had a goal chalked off from the last kick.

“We’re disappointed not to get three points from a winning position but I can’t complain when I look at the entire game.

“We’ve shown great character to come back from a goal down in the first place, particularly the manner of the goal.

“It can really affect a team when you’ve brought about your own downfall but we got on with it.”

Hythe’s Velocity Cup tie at Ashford, scheduled for tonight (Wednesday), has been rearranged for November 7.

The Cannons host Littlehampton in Isthmian South East on Tuesday night (7.45pm).
