Hythe Town manager Steve Watt says Jake Embery and Johan Caney-Bryan could be the best strike partnership in Isthmian South East

Hythe boss Steve Watt believes he may have the best strike partnership in Isthmian South East.

Johan Caney-Bryan and Jake Embery have forged a real understanding for the Cannons.

They assisted each other in a 4-0 win at Hordean on Saturday, while Ethan Smith and Kai Garande - with his first senior goal - were also on target.

Embery has added to his game since joining Hythe from Sheppey in the summer and has proved the perfect partner for last season’s top scorer, Caney-Bryan.

“I think those two could be the best strike partnership in the league,” said Watt, whose side host National South Tonbridge in the FA Trophy Second Round this Saturday (3pm).

“They complement each other so well.

“I think Jake has changed a lot since he’s been here.

“He’s much more of a team player - I’d imagine this is the hardest he’s ever worked for anyone.

“On Saturday we needed him to go left-midfield and he was like, ‘yeah, no problem’ and he got his goal.

“You know you’re going to get goals when you sign Jake but everything else has surprised me. He’s been a great signing.

“For me, Johan is the ultimate No.9. He gives you everything.

“He’s a good size, he’s physical, he can move, he’s athletic and he gets goals.

“We’re starting to see how good their partnership can be.

“I think they’ve got 12 goals between them - eight for Johan and four for Jake - but it’s how they work together that’s so pleasing.

“They don’t always play as two No.9s - sometimes we have Jake in the No.10 role - but however we set them up, the partnership is working.”

Attacking midfielder Smith is another player excelling at Hythe.

Released by Gillingham a couple of years ago, the youngster is going from strength to strength.

“He’s unreal,” said Watt. “What a player - I love him.

“He’s not easy on the eye like a DJ Oldaker but he’s an animal.

“His goal on Saturday - he’s nicked the ball and run half the length of the pitch, the centre-half has tried to clean him out but he’s rolled the tackle, stayed on his feet and passed it into the goal.

“That’s his sixth goals and he’s probably got six or seven assists as well.

“I talk about Jake and Johan as a partnership but you could include Ethan as a three.

“Between them, they’ve got everything.”

Hythe are looking forward to testing themselves against Tonbridge in the Trophy this weekend.

It’s the Cannons’ first appearance in round two and they can’t wait.

Watt said: “It’s a great opportunity for my boys to come up against a very good side and measure how good they are.

“I’m pretty sure Jay (Saunders, Angels boss) will be expecting a really tough game.

“It might not be - they might win 5-0 - but we’ll try to make it as difficult as we can.

“Both teams are in good form.

“Tonbridge are going to be favourites.

“They’ll have the bulk of the ball and we’ll have to weather some storms but we’re used to that.

“We’re not a possession side who are used to having 70% of the ball, so it’s no different for us.”

Last night’s Kent Senior Cup tie against Sittingbourne was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
