Hythe Town manager Steve Watt hits out at ‘club-bashing’ in Kent and says non-league sides should look out for each other

Hythe manager Steve Watt can’t understand the ‘club-bashing’ that exists in Kent non-league football.

The Cannons have copped their share of stick following a series of postponements at Reachfields this season.

Their pitch has suffered in the winter months and it seems to have become personal in some quarters.

Ramsgate fans, who enjoy watching their team on 3G at Southwood these days, haven’t forgotten the postponement of an FA Trophy earlier this season.

But those criticising Hythe’s pitch should remember where they came from, according to Watt.

“Non-league clubs don’t have to like each other, and rivalries are fine,” said Watt, whose side drew 2-2 at home to Rams in Isthmian South East on Saturday.

“But at one point in time, everyone was in the same boat, struggling because of their pitch.

“People have got short memories.

“Not everyone has a pot of gold, like Ramsgate have, to put 3G down. I remember what their pitch used to be like.

“I just think it’s time we support each other in non-league because it is difficult where we’ve suffered from the weather.

“Clubs that have got these great facilities now, brilliant, good luck to them. It’s fantastic.

“I love to see that, particularly in Kent because I always want to see the Kent clubs do well.

“But I really hate this club-bashing for I don’t know what reason.

“The fact we’ve had so many games called off is only affecting one team - and that’s us.

“It could be the reason why we don’t get back in the play-offs because we’ve got a small squad and we’ve got 20 games to play in three months.”

Lex Allan opened the scoring against Ramsgate, with Jake Embery rescuing a point after the league leaders went 2-1 up.

Watt said: “Considering three of their players cost more than my 16, it was a great point.

“We’ll take it but I can’t help thinking we could have won the game won the game with the chances we created.

“It was an even game but I still don’t know how we haven’t scored four goals.

“Tom Hadler made a great save from Jake Embery in a one-on-one and his follow-up save from Aaron Barnes was one of the saves of the season, which would have put us 2-0 up.

“Frannie Collin’s missed a free header from six yards and we had a couple more chances, but it’s a decent point because it’s always tough playing the top of the league and Ben (Smith, Rams boss) has put a fantastic side together.”

Hythe, beaten 3-1 at home by Erith & Belvedere last night, visit Littlehampton on Saturday (3pm).

They go to Three Bridges next Tuesday (7.45pm).
