Debenhams' Kent stores face more uncertainty amid closure claims

The future of dozens of Debenhams stores hang in the balance as it looks to avoid slumping into administration.

Debenhams could close up to 90 stores - 40 more than it announced in October - a report in the Telegraph suggests.

That could result in the loss of thousands of jobs nationwide.

The firm currently has outlets in Ashford, Gravesend, Folkestone, Canterbury, Westwood Cross and Chatham.

A Medway councillor has previously said he fears for the future of the Chatham High Street branch.

Debenhams says it is not responding to the report.

However, KentOnline understands the complexity and uncertainty of the outcome of negotiations to keep the Debenhams brand alive means all options are likely to be the table - although there is no revised closure plan to the one publicly announced at the end of last year.

It comes hot on the heels of a dip in like-for-like sales over the Christmas period.

On Thursday, Debenhams plc held its AGM which saw chairman Sir Ian Cheshire step down with immediate effect after two major shareholders - Mike Ashley's Sports Direct and the Dubai-based Landmark Group - voted against his re-election to the board.

Similar opposition also saw chief executive Sergio Bucher fail to be re-elected - despite having the support of more than 99% of other shareholders.

He will, however, continue as CEO and report to the board.

Terry Duddy, Debenhams' senior independent director, who is appointed interim chairman with immediate effect, said: "I recognise that individual shareholders have wished to register their dissatisfaction.

"I would like to thank Ian for his strong leadership of the board and his contribution to the business. We wish him all the best for the future.

"I am looking forward to working with Sergio. My first task is to meet with shareholders so that I understand any concerns that they may have."

Sir Ian Cheshire added: "In unprecedented market conditions the team has worked incredibly hard to build a format for the future and a comprehensive plan to reshape the business, which will put Debenhams on the road to recovery and future success.

"Whilst it is right that I step down, I wish the team at Debenhams every success in the future".
