Discovery Park in Sandwich welcomes National Grid and DONG Energy to the site

Discovery Park has welcomed two more tenants to the science and business park meaning for the first time it is now at 54% occupancy.

The latest tenants are DONG Energy, a world leader in offshore wind and National Grid, an international electricity and gas company.

National Grid decided to open an office at Discovery Park to use as a central hub for the Richborough Connection project which proposes an electricity connection between Richborough and Canterbury which is needed to join the Nemo Link.

This is an electricity link between Belgium and the UK to their existing network.

The office will act as a base for the operational team that will progress the project, including technical experts, consultants and a surveyor.

Steve Self, Richborough Connection project manager said: “Discovery Park is a great option for National Grid’s Richborough Connection project office.

"It’s really important to us to be embedded in the community that we are consulting with and there is the added bonus of it being a cost effective location complete with business support services.”

He explained they chose this location for good travel links and value for money.

DONG Energy from Denmark, is opening the office in Discovery Park to accommodate some of its UK workforce.

The site was chosen as it will mean staff can be closer to the London Array, an offshore wind farm.

Benj Sykes, DONG Energy’s offshore wind UK country manager said: “As the global leader in offshore wind energy, we are delighted to be relocating one of our key technical teams to Discovery Park.

“It will provide an ideal base for the eight-strong High Voltage team which provides support to the London Array, the world’s biggest offshore wind farm, in which DONG Energy is a partner. We look forward to building strong working relationships with other businesses in the area.”
