Carey Miles, from Canterbury Historic River Tours, offers student a job after witnessing good deed

The boss of a Canterbury tourist business was so impressed by a student's small act of kindness that he offered him a job.

Carey Miles, who runs Canterbury Historic River Tours, watched as Luke Mumford approached a homeless man sitting in the High Street and handed him a coffee.

He raced after the youngster and discovered he was a newly-arrived student in the city.

Mr Miles said: “I was very impressed by him and his thoughtfulness so offered him a job with my business next season.

“There is a lot of student bashing in the city and they get a lot of grief, but I employ quite a few of them and he seemed a very decent young man.”

The arrival of freshers in the city has prompted a lot of complaints about noise and nuisance on social media and forums like the Canterbury Residents Group Facebook page.

Mr Miles says he posted his experience to offer another view.

“I don’t want to make a big deal about it, but just thought there should be a bit of balance to all the bad publicity,” he said.

“It’s very refreshing to see a young lad walking down the high street, stop and provide one of our homeless persons with a large coffee as he walked past.

“He made no fuss, but it was extremely well-received by the chap.

“I thought about it for a moment, and then chased after the young lad and called out to him.

“I wanted to thank him for his goodwill, we had a little chat and it turned out that he was called Luke Mumford and a first-year student at Canterbury College studying graphics.

“I was so impressed with him I offered him a job next year. So this is a post to be positive and cheer our students, well done Luke Mumford.”
