Maidstone: Bank Street post office closes down to be incorporated into Week Street WHSmith

Self-service machines could be seen being moved out of the former Maidstone post office this morning.

The branch has closed and will now be incorporated into the WHSmith store on Week Street.

The move was decided following a six week consultation, where bosses chose to close the Bank Street branch and move it to the new site just 250 metres away.

This is part of a modernisation programme and will see the new branch have five counters and three self-service kiosks.

The Bank Street unit opened after the previous post office in King Street closed down almost a decade ago.

The building on the corner of Wyke Manor Street was built in 1928, and has remained empty since the exchange moved out.

There are also still post office branches on the high street in Kullar News, and also on Kingsley Road.
