After five months of delays TruGym at Chatham Maritime will open in March say bosses

Fitness fans who joined a gym at Chatham Maritime still have nowhere to work out more than five months after they paid their membership fee.

People keen to find a reasonably priced gym snapped up an attractive offer to join TruGym, which is set to open near the Dockside Outlet Centre.

Some say they paid the initial £10.99 joining fee back in August last year but still don’t know when the gym will be opening.

The included Robert Brownsword, who said he understood TruGym was due to open in October and he was frustrated by the delay.

He added: “I have been following the updates on the gym supposedly opening which has now been delayed by five-plus months with no end in sight.

“This company has taken money from people and was promising to open in October, but that date has been put back. Many people are understandably upset.”

Other people also posted similar comments on the TruGym’s Facebook page.

Suze MacArthur wrote: “You have been saying you’re opening soon since August 2014.”

Beth Sanders added: “We all joined with the intention of using it because it was a good price and it’s in a good location.

“Just very frustrating not knowing when we can start reaping the benefits.”

TruGym manager Karl Patton, 28, revealed this week that the gym will open in about six or seven weeks. Mr Patton said: “We will open either during the first or second week of March.

“There were delays with the internal construction of the gym as it was a blank canvas and it is a big building which covers 17,000 sq ft, but our contractors have agreed we will open then.”

The company, which has several gyms across the country, says on its website that people who join before the club opens will get a discounted rate of £10.99 to join which will secure their membership.

It goes on to say that no further payments are taken from members until a month after the gym opens.

Mr Patton said the discount offer is still available. He added: “It really is worth signing up, for that price you get access all areas. We will be open from 5am to midnight.”

The gym will offer yoga, Zumba and spin classes, and the chance to take up specialised sessions with freelance personal trainers. There will be male and female saunas in the changing areas.

Mr Patton said those who have signed up can use TruGym in Maidstone or Bromley until the Chatham branch opens – they just need to take the email conformation of their membership with them.
