Aylesford: 1,000 jobs at risk as Morrisons admits site may close

WORKERS at the Aylesford Morrisons distribution centre have been dealt a blow by news that the site is one of three earmarked for possible closure.

In a statement on Friday lunchtime Morrisons said it had completed its review of its distribution network.

It said: "The indications from the review are that three depots may no longer be required, and, subject to consultation, sites in Aylesford, Bristol and Warrington are at risk of closure."

Of the 2,500 jobs affected by the announcement, 1,000 jobs could be lost at Aylesford. Hopes that redunancies can be minimised have been put forward by the company. It is calling on staff to consider transfer to other posts.

In its statement the company said: "Our combined distribution network is currently scaled to service over 600 stores. We now have overcapacity in our depot operations as a result of the disposal of around 200 stores and a more focused geographical spread.

"The company is now aiming for a distribution network which meets the needs of the business going forward."

Morrisons warehouse and distribution director, Chris Noone, added: "Many and varied options have been considered and each has been thoroughly assessed.

"These recommendations follow a detailed review of each depot’s operational circumstances and fit within the network; and an appraisal of their ability to service the Group’s future distribution needs.

"We are currently discussing the proposals and consulting with all those concerned with a view to agreeing a plan for the best way forward."

Morrisons bosses are currently meeting with union officials to discuss the review findings. Staff consultation is planned.
