Climate Camp - Fence assault

Sorry, this video asset has been removed.

There have been several clashes between police and protesters today at the perimeter fence of Kingsnorth Power Station.

Several hundred demonstrators converged on the outskirts of the plant site at around 10.30am.

It is understood around 20 managed to scale the eight foot perimeter fence using metal railings.

As each protester made it on to E.ON land there were huge cheers from the crowd. Some protesters put up a banner on the inner fence saying no new coal.

The eco-activists were then faced with crossing a dyke and climbing a 10ft electrified inner fence where riot police and E.ON security were standing guard.

It is thought the electricity running through the fence was turned off after demonstrators ignored warnings from police to stay back.

Police have informed us that four people have managed to climb over the inner fence but have been arrested.

It is unclear if others have made it over the inner fence.

A further 19 are said to now be on land between the first and second fence.

The remaining crowds on the other side of the fence have now dispersed, following the arrival of riot police.

A police helicopter hovered above and an announcement warned the crowd that police would be using batons and dogs.

Clashes between officers and protesters broke out as police pulled down the railings being used to climb the fences. One protesters was knocked down and one of the railing came down on top of him but he was unhurt.

Police in riot gear are now guarding the fence and crowds have been moved on.

Officers have closed in around the power station and are have closed roads near the site.
