Gillingham youth team manager Darren Hare is on the mend after suffering a heart attack on Tuesday night.

The 43-year-old, pictured, was rushed to hospital and underwent heart surgery shortly after returning from a scouting trip for the Gills.

Gills boss Andy Hessenthaler, who is Hare’s brother-in-law, was happy to confirm that he is getting better.

Hessenthaler said: "He is back home and that’s amazing because when I saw him after he had the heart attack he was certainly in a real bad way.

"It just shows you what the hospitals can do now and credit to them."

Gillingham’s youth match against Brighton on Saturday was postponed.

"It’s been a tough week for us," said Hessenthaler. "Especially for me, with him being a family member and a member of this football club.

"To have a heart attack on Tuesday and nearly lose his life, for all of the players, especially the younger ones, it’s obviously been on their mind."

Bryan Bull, the club’s centre of excellence manager, will take charge of the youth team until Hare is able to return.
