BROMLEY Hospitals NHS Trust has been issued with a warning over its cleanliness by the Healthcare Commission.

In a two-day random inspection on January, 21 and 22 at The Princess Royal University Hospital, there were found soiled commodes, bloodstains on the cot side rail of a bed and blood splashes on a wall, as well as layers of dust in other areas of the hospital.

It was served a notice to improve and put in special measures.

Ian Wilson, chief executive at Bromley Hospitals Trust Ian Wilson said: "I would like to reassure the people of Bromley and surrounding areas that we provide safe clinical care at The Princess Royal University Hospital and that we take the prevention and control of infection very seriously.

"As a result, our hospital-acquired infection rates have been among the lowest in London over the last year. In the nine months from April to December 2007 we have had seven patients with MRSA – less than one per month.

"We have reduced the rate of patients acquiring c.diff by two-thirds from January 2007, down to eight in December 2007. This puts the Trust in the top third of Trusts in London with the lowest C-diff rates.

"However, we are not complacent, we are keen to learn how we can improve still further, and continuously strive to keep infection rates to an absolute minimum."
