Kent's primary schools improving

Classroom standards in primary schools in Kent have shown further improvements, according to official government figures.

But they remain below the national average in the core subjects, based on the results for Key Stage 2 tests - the SATS taken by all 11-year-olds in 2008.

The tables show there were improvements in all three core subjects of English, maths and science in Kent.

You can find out how well individual Kent schools did by looking at the official Government league tables here.

When looking at the statistics, it is worth remembering that the Government bases its assessment of performance on a range of factors. Our tables include the most important indicators.

These include the percentage of pupils achieving Level 4 in each of the core subjects of maths, English and science. Level 4 is the nationally expected measure.

The percentage of pupils reaching Level Four in English - the nationally expected level - was 79 per cent, a rise of two per cent on 2007.

In maths, the percentage of pupils achieving Level Four rose to 75 per cent from 73 per cent in 2007. In science, there was a rise of one per cent to 85 per cent.

There was a drop in the number of pupils achieving higher standards in English and maths, but a small increase in science.

In English, 29 per cent of pupils achieved Level Five in 2008, a drop of three per cent on the results for 2007. In science, there was a one per cent increase in pupils reaching Level Five, rising to 38 per cent. In maths, there was a one per cent drop to 30 per cent.

Kent’s average point score was 27.5 per pupil, an increase of 0.1 per cent on 2007 but below the national average of 28 per pupil.

The publication of the tables follows a widespread controversy over their marking last year.
