The KM Group has joined forces with the National Trust in a £1.2m appeal to buy a section of the White Cliffs.
Our sister paper, The Mercury, is the official media partner for the appeal.
The NT charity wants to buy a one a 1.35km (just under one mile) stretch of the cliffs, between the NT’s visitor centre at Langdon Cliffs and the South Foreland lighthouse at St Margaret’s.
The land is currently owned by a farmer, who has offered it to the NT - but the deadline for buying it is the end of the year.
Buying the land will mean people will have access to more areas of the clifftop.
Hilary McGrady, National Trust director for London and South East, said: “We are thrilled to have the support of the Mercury and the KM Group for our White Cliffs Appeal.
“This is the trust’s largest ever coastal fundraiser - the £1.2m target is ambitious but we have every hope we can succeed with the support of the public.
"The White Cliffs are an iconic national landscape, but they are, of course, particularly dear to those in Kent and to have the support of Dover and East Kent Mercury readers will be an enormous boon.
“As a multi-media company with a large reach across the county in print, on radio and online, the backing of the KM group will really help us to spread word of the appeal.”
Buying this section of the white cliffs will complete the missing link of coastline under National Trust care, uniting a stretch of more than 7km (nearly five miles).
There are various ways people can donate to the appeal.
It can be done online at www.nationaltrust.org.uk/whitecliffsappeal and people can have their name engraved on a virtual White Cliffs.
Donations can be made via text. To donate £5, text DOVR02 £5 to 70070. The amount must be included in the text.
