The deadline to register to vote in the general election is today.

Voters have until midnight tonight to sign up, or they will not be able to take part in the ballot on polling day.

As many as 7.5 million people in the UK have not yet registered, and face being turned away from polling stations on May 7.

This year marks the first general election where people can register to vote online.

Everyone must be on the electoral register to vote, and it takes five minutes to sign up.

Residents only need to have their National Insurance number and date of birth to hand.
