Charlie Lee is hoping to end his loan spell on a winning note when Gillingham face Macclesfield on Saturday.

The midfielder’s month-long deal from Peterborough expires after the weekend and he looks set to head back to the League 1 club, despite Gillingham’s efforts to extend the stay for a further month.

Lee has made an immediate impact at Priestfield after stepping down a division to get match practice and show his parent club what they are missing.

"It’s been a brilliant time for me and I’ve loved every minute," said the
23-year-old.

"I owe Gillingham a lot for taking me in and, if I can give something back, then that would be brilliant. Hopefully, I can get a goal on Saturday and the team can win. That would be a great end to my time at the club.

"If the manager at Peterborough does want me back and I’m involved, then that will be brilliant and it has helped me by getting some games at Gillingham. I thank Andy Hessenthaler for bringing me down and letting me play.

"You don’t realise when you’re not playing how much you lose your confidence. I’ve got that back and now I’m looking forward to Saturday."

Lee arrived along with friend and Peterborough team-mate Chris Whelpdale to help rescue the Gills as their season slipped to a new low after an FA Cup first round defeat to Dover.

Since then, the Gills have improved, won their last two League 2 games away from home and appear to be heading back in the right direction.
