Dartford's QEII bridge has been closed as strong winds lash the county.

Gusts have also led to accidents, with one lorry driver's cab roof blowing off and smashing into another truck.

In Dartford, the bridge closure is causing traffic tailbacks at the crossing.

The Highways Agency shut the river crossing at about 1pm for safety reasons and says it does not expect it to re-open again until the early hours of tomorrow morning, following Met office warnings.

Meanwhile traffic is being split between the tunnels, with Essex-bound traffic using the west bore and Kent-bound motorists diverted through the east bore.

The agency has warned drivers to expect long queues during rush hour, and is advising drivers of high-sided vehicles, caravans and motorbikes to take extra care in the wind.

Meanwhile, in the east of the county, long delays built up after a lorry overturned in high winds on the A20.

The road was blocked in both directions between B2011 (Court Wood Interchange) and A20 The Viaduct / Elizabeth Road (Limekiln Roundabout).

There was also a build-up in traffic eastbound to A260 Alkham Valley Road (Round Hill Tunnel) and westbound to A2 Jubilee Way (Elevated Road) / East Cliff.

Drivers were urged to use a diversion via the B2011 (Folkestone Road).

In a separate accident on the A2 part of a lorry's cab roof blew off in the wind and smashed into another lorry's windscreen.

The incident happened about 1.5 miles from Whitfield on the coastbound carriageway of the A2 near Dover at around 11.45am today.

The driver of the lorry hit by the roof suffered minor injuries, which are not believed to be life-threatening.

Both carriageways were blocked and traffic on both came to a standstill, with diversions put in place.

The A2 has now been re-opened in both directions.
