A motorist had to be rescued by firefighters after his car crashed and overturned on Monday afternoon.

The man, who has not been named, is thought to have suffered suspected spinal injuries after the crash on the A249 Detling Hill, near Maidstone.

Firefighters and paramedics were called out to the Maidstone-bound carriageway at about 3pm where they found the man's vehicle, a Ford Mondeo, on its roof.

A crew from Maidstone fire station used hydraulic cutting equipment to free the man from the wreckage as it was suspected he may have suffered spinal injuries.

The driver who is 55 and from the Surrey area, was then taken to Maidstone Hospital for treatment.

Police closed the road for several hours while they dealt with the accident scene.

It is not known at this stage how the accident was caused, but gritting vehicles were later sent to lay more grit as temperatures in the area plummeted below freezing.

The crash has a knock-on effect on traffic on other roads in the area and a broken down car in the fast lane of the Chatham-bound A229, Blue Bell Hill later the same evening, also caused delays.

Detling Hill was fully reopened by police shortly before 8pm.
