Canterbury, Deal, Meopham and Sandwich featured in toilet tour of Kent

Everyone needs a hobby, although some people’s are rather more unusual than others.

Sam Smith has spent the last month documenting Kent’s public toilets, shooting a series of short videos in which he assesses the facilities in a number of towns and villages across the county.

Each month the 27-year-old – who has been filming flushes for five years – devotes his time to a particular region and in September he visited Kent, taking in Canterbury, Deal, Meopham and Sandwich in his lavatorial tour.

Favourite fixtures include older high level cisterns, but stainless steel bowls are frowned upon, along with modern plumbing.

A powerful flush is a must.

Each lavatory is rated from one to ten, with Canterbury Cathedral’s public washrooms missing out on a top rating thanks to a modern refurbishment.

A top-scoring toilet is the high level cistern at Kingsdown near Deal, awarded a sparkling nine of ten, despite sporting a stainless steel bowl.

Sam describes it as “a nice little seafront toilet with a recent cistern… decent flush, goes to show even stainless steel can look good with a high level.”

He has recorded restrooms up and down the country, with more than 200 videos posted to his Youtube channel, where a small but dedicated band of toilet enthusiasts await the latest installment.
