'Mini Sangatte' fears over controvsial KIG development

A 'mini Sangatte'.

That is what the proposed Kent International Gateway could turn into if it's built, opposers fear.

Kent Police have objected to the plans for the site near Bearsted due to fears about the depot's security in dealing with a potential terrorist attack or illegal immigrants.

The force has submitted its concerns over the project to the Government, which is now making the decision on the future of the 250-acre site near Maidstone.

Kent Police says its response is an objective appraisal of the issues surrounding the proposal from a policing perspective.

It comes as objectors to Kent International Gateway (KIG) are planning a series of mass protests.

They want to leave the Government in no doubt about the strength of opposition to the plans to construct a road/rail freight interchange across 250 acres of open countryside at Bearsted.

One of the plans is to form a human chain of adults and children linking hands across the Downs Way.

Anyone opposed to the KIG plans is being urged to register as a StopKIG supporter to co-ordinate opposition and to help with the organisation of the peaceful protests ahead of the planning inquiry in September.
