A grieving mother choked back tears of disbelief on hearing that a thug who viciously stabbed her son to death seven years ago had been let off with an eight month jail sentence for robbery.

Wendy Comins, 59, mother of Whitstable Rugby Club player Troy Comins, 26, who Steven Fields killed in 2001, reacted in horror and disbelief at the sentence.

“This latest decision beggars belief,” she said. “He stabbed my son. I have been given a life sentence.

“And this creature is still going round. There just isn’t any justice.”

Fields robbed a betting shop and threatened to stab the cashier just days after being released from prison for affray.

Told that the judge had refused to impose an indeterminate sentence on Fields because he did not consider he was sufficient danger to the public, Mrs Comins said: “What does he have to do to convince people he is a danger to the public.

“He stabbed my son to death. He has been jailed for an affray. He has threatened to stab this poor woman in a betting shop. Just what do you have to do to convince the courts you are a danger.”
