Plan for new food outlets refused

A STREET which already has 17 fast food restaurants won't be getting any more.

Developers had applied to open a pizza shop in one part of Canterbury Street, Gillingham, and a separate restaurant and take-away further down the road.

But Medway councillors decided enough was enough and at an area planning meeting threw out both applications.

One of the main concerns about the pizza delivery shop at 302b Canterbury Street was that it was too close to families' homes.

Cllr Stephen Kearney said: "This part of Canterbury Street backs on to alleyways. Rats could be attracted by the smell and rubbish would pile up in the alley."

Plans for the restaurant and take-away at the other end of the street, in three former shops at numbers 60, 62 and 64, were refused because of parking concerns, opening times and because the street had enough fast food outlets.
