The only road through a village was cordoned off for more than six hours after a 60-year-old quad bike passenger was rushed to hospital.

Police and the Kent Air Ambulance were scrambled to Bush Road, Cuxton, at 3.30pm yesterday after a crash between a quad bike and a car.

The red-and-black quad bike was being driven by a man who was thought to have fled the scene after it hit a Ford Focus near the A228.

His pillion passenger suffered serious injuries to her head, spine and limbs and was taken to the major trauma centre at King's College Hospital, London. Her current condition is unknown.

The transfer took 35 minutes in a normal ambulance after air ambulance crews said it was too dark.

A police helicopter was seen overhead hunting for the quad bike driver and police investigators asked shop staff if they could help.

A Kent Police spokesman said the driver was later found, but officers have not yet provided further details.

Both people on the quad bike were thought to be from the Medway area.

All three occupants of the Focus, who were from Wiltshire, were uninjured.

Witness Megan Sheridan, 15, said: "We drove through Cuxton and there was an ambulance and three police cars outside a house with the road closed off."

Witnesses should call Kent Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 01622 798538.
