Most party leaders can normally expect their first conference speech to take place against a benevolent audience of members who are on their side.
For Boris Johnson, the political backdrop could not be more testing - Brexit of course - added to which are a flurry of stories concerning his colourful personal life and questions regarding conflict of interests about decisions taken when he was London Mayor.
Throw in the fact the conference is taking place at the same time as - unusually - Westminster is sitting and the challenge facing the Prime Minister is not dissimilar to that facing a best man trying to find the right balance of ribald jokes about the groom and expressions of admiration for the bride.
He could be in a position of setting out his vision for the country at the start of the week and face a motion of no confidence in his government at the end.
Either way, it looks like being another stormy week for politicians of all stripes. Who will survive the deluge?
