Voters have chosen their new representative for the Rochester South and Horsted ward of Medway Council.

Thursday's by-election followed the resignation of Cllr John Ward in March, after a row over comments made on his online blog.

Tory candidate Trevor Clarke took the vacant seat. He will join current ward councillors Nicholas Brice and Sylvia Griffin.

The votes cast for each candidate were as follows:

Trevor Anthony Clarke Conservative 1,847

Adam Robert William Price Labour 819

Viv Parker Liberal Democrat 767

Brian Christian Ravenscroft British National Party 257

Simon Philip Marchant The Green Party 104

The turnout was 41 per cent.
