Tory minister plan to protect river jobs

The Tories are looking at plans to protect wharves along the Medway if they win the next general election.

The promise was made by Julian Brazier, the Shadow transport minister, after visiting the river's business users.

Sitting opposite Gun Wharf, Medway Council's headquarters, Mr Brazier said his party was committed to protecting transport infrastructure and would review housing targets for Medway and other authorities.

Gun Wharf houses the planners behind the creation of the Rochester Riverside redevelopment which saw the loss of three wharves and 400 river jobs.

The same team is now proposing changes to Medway City Estate to create riverside homes and a public walk where businesses are located.

Roy Brooks from Scotline told Mr Brazier that his company wanted to expand on the river but there was nowhere for them to increase their business.

He said: "Businesses are going to be lost and so will jobs."
