Council chief executive David Hughes said:: “The borough council extends its deepest sympathy to the family and friends of the deceased worker, who was playing a vital part in keeping this a litter free borough.”

Officers from Kent Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit and the Health and Safety Executive is investigating the incident.

Mr Hughes added: “The council will, of course, provide any assistance required by the police or Health and Safety Executive as they investigate the causes of this tragic accident.”

The drivers of the two lorries, a Volvo Flatbed HGV and the Ford Transit Tipper Veolia refuse truck, were treated for shock at the scene.

The road was closed for six hours while emergency services and police officers worked at the scene.
