Five years ago Brogdale, near Faversham, set a new UK record of 38.5C (101.3F) on August 10, beating the previous record of 37.1C (98.8F) set in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, on August 3, 1990.

Outlook: We will continue with this topsy-turvy weather.

Friday will be a much fresher day than many of late. A nice bright day with lots of sunshine, mixed with a few cloudy spells. Winds 25mph from the north west. Feeling cool on the north Kent coast at 19C (66f) but 21C (70F) at Folkestone in lighter winds of 15mph.

Saturday will have a nice bright start until cloud reaches west Kent at about 2pm, although this might not reach Thanet until evening. Rain will die out overnight but there will be up to 10mm in places. Winds 10mph, westerly. Temperatures 21C (70F), average.

Sunday might start cloudy but the cloud should break up by mid-morning. We should all enjoy a nice summer’s day, but no heat wave at 22C (72F) at best. Winds light, westerly.

From Monday to Thursday there will be a lot of fine weather, but it will be on the humid side. Cloud will bubble up at times, giving us short, sharp showers. Temperatures will be above normal at 22 to 24C (72 to 75F).

Forecast confidence is about 70 per cent - compared with my normal 85-95 per cent - because the weather is in such a changeable mode.
