Gills boss Martin Allen will see his first team squad back for pre-season training in just over seven weeks’ time and he’s expecting them to return in tip-top shape.

The whole squad was weighed before the final home league game against AFC Wimbledon, and will be checked again on their return.

“They are conscientious and ambitious, and they are well aware of what is needed now,” said Allen.

“I don’t think we will have too many problems when we get back.

"They have all been given targets for their body weights and body fat percentages. Everyone respects that they have to come back close to what they weighed two days before AFC Wimbledon.”

The Gillingham players are back in pre-season training on Wednesday, June 26 and are in action just three days later, with two games on the agenda.

Allen's men travel to Faversham on June 29, for a 1pm kick-off, before taking a side to Ashford United's Homelands Stadium for a 3pm kick-off on the same day.

An trip to Le Touquet is also planned, in July, as the team head for an intensive four days away in France.

The Gills are hoping to add at least one Premier League team to their pre-season fixture list. So far a visit from Championship side Millwall has been announced, for Saturday, July 20 (KO 12.30pm).
