Chesterfield 0 Gillingham 1

GILLINGHAM claimed a rare away victory at Chesterfield after a smash and grab performance.

The Gills had few chances in the match, but took maximum points when Andrew Crofts headed home in the second minute of injury time.

A dull first half saw few chances for either team with Gillingham's best chance coming a minute before the break when Felix Bastians heading Nicky Southall's deep cross just over.

The home side, fighting for their League 1 status, didn?t fare much better and keeper Romain Larrieu was rarely troubled.

Ten minutes into the second half Gillingham nearly took the lead in spectacular style, as Danny Jackman hit a volley goalwards from 25 yards, only to see keeper Michael Jordan tip it onto the woodwork.

As Chesterfield pressed for a late winner Paul Hall came close with a shot that crashed against the underside of the cross bar and Larrieu did brilliantly to save the follow up.

It was former Gills player Paul Shaw who nearly stole a last gasp winner, but his long effort was cleared by Ian Cox, after Larrieu was beaten.

But it was Gillingham who nicked it at the death as Crofts bundled home Mark Bentley's hopeful cross from only a few yards out.

Gillingham: Larrieu, Jackman, Cox, Chorley, Southall, Flynn, Crofts, Bentley, Bastians (Easton 90), Spiller, Tonge (Sancho 84).
Subs Not Used: Johnson, McDonald, Collin.
Attendance: 3,867.
