David Griffiths says he hopes his move to Kent will add some pace and flair to the county’s bowling attack and push the team forward.

After spending nine years at Hampshire, Griffiths joins Durham paceman Mitch Claydon and youngsters Matt Hunn and Charlie Hartley in signing on for next season.

The 28-year-old said: “I see myself as a strike bowler.

“Hopefully, me and Mitch can bring a bit of pace and flair to the team and hopefully I add something different.”

“I’m a newcomer and I’ve got to prove my worth to the club. It’s good for me to get out of my comfort zone after being at Hampshire for nine years.

“It is a great opportunity for me. As soon as Kent came in for me I didn’t really look anywhere else. It’s nice to have someone want you and Jimmy Adams and Tredders wanted me at the club. It’s given me a lot of confidence and hopefully that confidence will bring me a lot of wickets.

“I want to push myself and move the team forward, that’s what I’m there to do.”

Griffiths’ Rose Bowl career was hampered by injury problems, including a stress-fracture of the back at the age of 19.

However, the former England under-19s star insisted: “The last two years I was only injured for about 10 days. There were other reasons why I didn’t play as much as I would have liked but injury-wise, I am fit and strong.”

He added: “I have had a chat with Jimmy and Tredders. I have got to come in and bowl well in pre-season and push myself in front of others – competition is good in a team and helps everyone along."

He added: “Mark Davies is a talented bowler. His economy is good, he holds his end up and takes wickets. If I could do as well as he did when he arrived, if not better, then it’s going to be good for me and the team.”

Griffiths also said he hoped he could ‘soften the blow’ of the club losing home-grown talent Matt Coles to Hampshire.

He said: “Colesey has gone in a different direction to me. He’s moved on. Hopefully, I can offer something different and start well with Kent and go on from there.”
