Devante McKain looks set for an extended run with the Gillingham first team.

The 19-year-old defender came on to replace the injured Leon Legge towards the end of Saturday’s defeat at Crawley.

And with fellow defenderCallum Davies requesting a loan move out of Priestfield, the door has been opened for the former Maidenhead player to take his chance.

“I saw him play midweek and he was outstanding,” said Gillingham boss Martin Allen, who watched the development side lose 3-2 after extra-time at Erith & Belvedere in the Kent Senior Cup on Wednesday night.

“He is quick and he is getting bigger and stronger and better technically, every day he trains with the first team squad.

“It was a big call (to put him on) but if you saw him play the other night you wouldn’t have been worried – as I wasn’t.”
