CANTERBURY'S men made a disappointing start to their home Slazenger National League campaign losing 5-2 to Beeston, the team they beat on the final day of last season to maintain their Premier Division status.

Jess Dowsing's fourth minute deflection gave the home side the perfect start but by half time Beeston had raced into a 3-1 lead.

Zak Jones brought the visitors level from their first attack, in the 11th minute, with Adam Dixon converting a 24th minute short corner, before skipper Adam Griffiths rifled in a third on the half hour.

When Griffiths struck again, just four minutes into the second period, ther game looked over but Canterbury responded within two minutes courtesy of Chris Bassano-Harper's short corner.

Canterbury enjoyed plenty of possession after that but struggled to create chances and near the end Beeston's James McBlane made the points safe, scoring from a rebound after home keeper Adrian Kimber had blocked Dominic Graham's shot.

Holcombe made it through to the third round of the EH Cup on Saturday after beating Sevenoaks 5-4 with a golden goal in the club’s first ever evening game at Holcombe Park.

Goals from Ian Brine, Dave Mathews and Denzil Dolley had helped Holcs cruise into a 3-1 lead but sloppy defending allowed Sevenoaks to score three more goals to go 4-3 up.

Holcs looked on their way out of the competition but Mathews scored a last-gasp equaliser from a short corner to send the game into extra-time.

Dan Laslett then fired in a shot from another short corner which the keeper could only parry and Dolley scored the winner on the rebound.

Head coach Giles Osborne said: "I was disappointed we let them back into the game after being 3-1 up but we kept going and pulled it out the fire.

"There was a really good atmosphere for our first floodlit game and it was certainly an exciting game."

BROMLEY and Beckenham suffered a 4-3 defeat to Guildford in round two of the EH Cup.

Guildford ended the game battling to hold onto the win after Bromley launched a late challenge against their higher division opponents.

National Division 1 side Guildford were crusing 4-1 ahead at one stage, but two goals in the last 10 minutes left the side hanging on, against their National South opponents.

The home side had gone two goals ahead at half-time. Jon Brett pulled one back for Bromley in the second half but another two left Guildford in command.

A late fightback saw Jon Smedley and Graham Butler score to make it 4-3 but time ran out as Bromley were looking to send the tie into extra-time.
