A249 towards Maidstone blocked after van fire sparks emergency response

Traffic on part of the A249 was stopped after a vehicle fire broke out.

Motorists travelling towards Maidstone, past Detling, were left stationary as emergency services dealt with the blaze.

Footage from the scenes shows dark grey smoke billowing from a vehicle with a fire engine nearby.

Seconds later, a second engine can be seen travelling on the other carriageway as it tries to make its way to the scene.

The blaze, which destroyed the front of a van, is between the Stockbury roundabout and the White Horse Wood Country Park.

One witness at the scene, Jack Daniel Wells, said: “The fire crews put the fire out, but remain at the scene. Hopefully nobody is hurt. There’s no ambulances here yet.”

The fire service confirmed they were called at 1.38pm and closed the carriageway while they worked on the scene.

It has since reopened.
