Huge delays around Quarry Wood retail park in Aylesford

Motorists were stuck in long queues after contractors repairing a burst water main closed one lane of the A20 without installing any traffic measures.

With the Maidstone-bound carriageway of the A20 at Aylesford entirely closed between Hall Road and Hermitage Lane, traffic was left hoping for a gap in traffic from the opposite direction.

Eventually the delays were so bad the police had to attend from around 1.30pm and start directing the traffic.

Frustrated motorists have contacted KentOnline to tell of the huge delays, with some stuck in the car park at Sainsbury's for four hours.

There is a diversion in place for HGVs via the M20.

The problem first arose on Saturday, but the traffic was worse today - and the lane is likely to remain closed until well into Monday.

Daniel Markham, from East Malling, said: "I spoke to some drivers and they said they had been queuing for two hours. This is always a busy road. It shouldn't have been left without a proper diversion."
