Immigration enforcement in Maidstone High Street

The Home Office's immigration enforcement team detained an Albanian woman in a town centre.

One van from the government department was parked up in Maidstone High Street on Wednesday afternoon.

Witnesses saw one woman being placed in the back of the van before it drove off at around 1.45pm.

The Home Office has now confirmed it was visiting Best Cut in Bank Street.

Checks identified a 25-year-old Albanian woman who had entered the UK illegally, according to the Home Office. She must now report to immigration enforcement while her case is dealt with.

A Home Office spokesman said: "Where illegal working is suspected, businesses may be served a notice warning that a financial penalty of up to £20,000 per illegal worker may be imposed.

"The employer will be liable unless they can demonstrate that appropriate right to work document checks were carried out such as seeing a passport or Home Office document confirming permission to work."
