Drivers have been warned to expect delays due to lane closures on the Maidstone Bridges one-way system.

As the works to improve traffic flow in the the town centre enter a third week, Kent Highways announced lanes would be closing today.

The subways at Bishop's Way and Fairmeadow will also be closed today in preparation for being filled in with foam concrete.

Kent County Council said footpaths will remain open.

Lane closures were in place on the approach to Maidstone, from Chatham, this morning but had re-opened by this afternoon.

Phase 1 of the project will also involve removing traffic islands and widening Fairmeadow, near the clock.

Work started on Monday, June 6 and so far drivers have not experienced much disruption as work has been centred on a substation next to the road.

The £5.7m project will see two new lanes created to enable drivers using the A229 toward Blue Bell Hill and Chatham to avoid the bridge system.

Work will stop in November and continue in the New Year if necessary.

A Kent County Council spokesman said: "At this early stage there seems to be minimal disruption but this will be monitored throughout progress.

“This week will see the removal of the existing air monitoring station and the commencement of the retaining wall fronting the UK Power Network sub-station, to protect it as the carriageway is widened.

“The existing traffic islands will continue to be removed and works at the subways will also commence.

“Updates will be regularly put on Twitter and the local community and businesses will be updated by our dedicated public liaison officer, Rebecca Edwards."
