One police constable was hit in and around his left eye by saliva and the other was hit on the left side of his face and bottom lip during the incident in a car park in Leafy Lane, Allington, near Maidstone on Monday.

Rowatt has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at Medway Magistrates’ Court on March 14.

Chief Inspector Ray Quiller said: "It isn’t and never will be acceptable for police officers to be subjected to any type of assault while they are carrying out their duties to uphold the law and protect the public they serve.

"We will always seek to prosecute anyone suspected of this type of attack to the full extent of the law and, if found guilty, they can expect to receive significant sanctions."
