Mass protest planned in village

Campaigners will be given the opportunity to meet the bosses behind a proposal to open a national supermarket chain in their beloved village.

A public meetng is being held in Lenham on Saturday, November 24, with representatives from the Southern Co-Operative Group.

The company wants to build a food store at the former ironmongers in Faversham Road.

Hundreds of people are expected to attend the open discussion in the community centre, in Groom Way, at 10am.

Many of those likely to attend the event, organised by the parish council, will also be at a public demonstration in the village square, at around 7pm on Monday November 19.

The protest is being arranged by the key leaders of a fight against the plans.

The campaign group is made up of traders, clubs, pub landlords and residents, who have secured the support of TV personalities Carol McGiffin and Ian Hislop, and Hugh Robertson, the MP for Faversham and Mid Kent.
Mr Robertson’s consistency office was above the ironmongers before it was completely destroyed in an arson attack in 2010.
