Sinkhole appears in Maidstone East Station car park in Station Road, Maidstone

By Kent Messenger reporter

A sinkhole has opened up in a busy station car park - completely destroying the surface.

The hole, which is now said to be 4m wide and between 3 and 4m deep, appeared in the Maidstone East Station car park early this morning near the entrance. It is blocking around six car park spaces.

A smaller hole has also appeared nearby.

Contractors have been called to resurface the car park

An area of the car park has been cordoned off and engineers have been at the scene today.

A spokesman for Network Rail said specialist contractors were due to start work on filling it and resurfacing tomorrow.

A full survey of the car park to detect any further voids will also be carried out.
