New protective gear for county's firefighters

A NEW lighter colour, lighter weight suit will be worn by Kent's firefighters from the beginning of next month.

The new protective gear includes a two-piece suit, helmet, gloves and boots and follows months of testing and consultation with crews.

Modern materials mean a lighter weight coat and over trousers, which are easier and quicker to put on, and the lighter colour reflects more heat than before.

Futuristic looking new helmets have side impact protection and a drop-down, full face visor.

The firehood is made from a special material to give added protection while the gloves have a special membrane to provide better protection against chemicals and fluids.
