Security warning to horse owners after thefts

Police are warning horse owners to be vigilant after two high-value thefts at stables in west Kent.

During the first burglary, thousands of pounds worth of riding gear, including saddles and tack, was stolen from a charity equestrian centre dedicated to teaching disadvantaged children.

It was reported to have happened at Team Tutsham in West Farleigh between 8.30pm on Thursday, June 8 and 8am on Friday, June 9.

Another burglary was also reported at 2.25am this morning, where 30 saddles and 30 bridles were stolen from a farm in Clapper Lane, Staplehurst.

Padlocks used to secure the gate and the outbuildings were broken off in order to gain entry.

Police are advising horse owners to help prevent theft by ensuring all tack and horses are secured and where possible, out of sight and monitored by CCTV.

Property should also be marked and where possible photos taken to help identify any stolen equipment.

Sgt Darren Walshaw of the Rural Task Force said: "While it is impossible to prevent all burglaries and theft of horse equipment, owners can take steps such as the above to help prevent this and to make it harder for criminals to steal and sell on equipment.

"Kent Police works closely with Kent Horse Watch which offers a wealth of advice and support as well as prevention events where riding equipment can be marked. They also help to coordinate events such as freeze marking for horses."
