Maidstone water leak sees Pudding Lane closed for second day

A road in Maidstone is shut for a second day following the chaos when a water main ruptured.

The drama saw many of the town's businesses and homes lose water completely, while others suffered low pressure.

Kent Police officers discovered water gushing into the High Street in the early hours of Friday and alerted South East Water.

Engineers were able to stop the leak and supply returned yesterday at 1pm.

The main which broke is in Pudding Lane and that road remains closed today, at its junction with the High Street.

Diversions will apply to drivers and buses and Nu-Venture has already tweeted to say its number 23 service will not serve Mill Street.

Some businesses have only just re-opened after dealing with flooding yesterday.

Abbey Hatcher, supervisor at Buddha Belly restaurant in Pudding Lane, said: "We had water which had got into the cellar. The restaurant itself was ok, but we had to close yesterday while it was dealt with.

"I'm pleased to say we are open as normal today, but the road remains closed."

While South East water was dealing with the emergency pallets of bottled water were dropped off in the town centre.

Other venues, such as the Brenchley pub in Jubilee Square and ASK Italian in Earl Street, warned customers on Friday they might have to close while staff monitored the situation.
