A teacher has been convicted of having an affair with a student.

Stuart Kerner, 44, of Russett Close, Aylesford, was a teacher at Bexleyheath Academy when the offences took place.

At Inner London Crown Court last week he was convicted on two counts of abusing a position of trust and having sexual activity with a teenage girl.

Kerner was arrested at his home in January 2013 and charged in August of that year.

He was cleared on four other counts of the same offence, as well as two counts of sexual activity with a child.

In a statement on the school’s website at the time of Kerner’s arrest, principal Carl Wakefield said: “As the academy was made aware of these allegations by the police in January, safeguarding protocols were adhered to, due process followed and the member of staff in question was suspended with immediate effect.”

Kerner will return to court to be sentenced on Wednesday, January 14.
