Arrests after serious assault in Week Street, Maidstone

Two men have been arrested on suspicion of assault following an early morning attack in Maidstone town centre.

The pair, both 18 and from Sittingbourne, have been released on bail until Tuesday, October 6.

Week Street was almost entirely taped off for around six hours, with the cordon running from HSBC on High Street up to Tesco Express, after the assault at 3.50am left one man with serious head injuries.

One man was arrested in connection with the incident over the weekend but later released without charge.

One victim, a 50-year-old man, was punched and fell to the floor.

He is believed to have struck his head on the floor when he fell - leading him to be taken to hospital with a serious head injury.

The second victim, a 25-year-old man, was also assaulted and it's reported he had a road sign thrown at him.

He suffered head and back injuries, which are not thought to be serious.

The victims were walking in the direction of the High Street when the alleged assault took place.

Kent Police and paramedics attended the scene in the early hours.

Passersby reported seeing a man on the floor covered by a sheet being attended by paramedics.

Forensics teams were spotted on the scene.

A police presence remained after the road reopened.

Many shops on Week Street were forced to open later than scheduled.

Shoppers could access the street shortly after 10am.

Detective Inspector Neil Kimber said: "Both were described as wearing dark clothing. One of them removed a dark jumper during the assault and was wearing a white t-shirt underneath.

"This incident has left a man with a serious head injury. If you have any information, no matter how small, please get in touch."
