Maidstone: Traffic jams as gyratory roadworks continue

Traffic in Maidstone town centre was at a standstill this morning as works on the gyratory system continue.

Kent County Council reported slow moving traffic on the A229 Royal Engineers Road, heading towards Fairmeadow, from about 10am.

The authority has advised drivers to allow extra time for their journeys.

From tomorrow, work will also take place on Saturdays. KCC has reassured drivers, worried about the clash with the M20 closure, this weekend's work won't cause traffic problems.

The £5.7m project will see two new lanes created to enable drivers using the A229 toward Blue Bell Hill and Chatham to avoid the bridge system.

Since the project started in June, work has mainly only taken place outside rush hour and only a few delays have been reported.

The road was clear just before midday.
