Maidstone: Window falls from block of flats on corner of Pudding Lane and Medway Street and hits taxi

A cyclist had a lucky escape after a window fell from the first floor of a town centre block of flats.

The rectangular frame came crashing down from the accommodation block on the corner of Pudding Lane and Medway Street in Maidstone and landed on a silver Mercedes taxi belonging to neighbouring Sapphire Cars.

As it bounced off the bonnet, causing dents and scuff marks, it spun around narrowly missing a man who was locking his bike up.

Revellers and staff members at the taxi rank can be seen looking on as driver Roland Barysas emerges from the car and looks up in shock.

Housing association Riverside, which owns the lease on the flats, has confirmed it is investigating the incident - which happened at 8.30pm on Friday - and has taken steps to ensure the building is safe.

Operations manager, Bev Covington, said: “As soon as we were alerted to the incident, action was taken to make the building safe.

"There are ongoing repairs, and an investigation to discover why the incident occurred will be carried out. Customer safety is always our first priority.”

The opening has now been covered with a sheet and Jason Hurkell-May, who is in charge of maintenance of communal areas at the property, said he did not think the windows can be opened for safety reasons and there have been issues of the hinges being broken.

Lee Jones, transport manager for Sapphire, said: “Miraculously the damage was minimal. It knocked off the Mercedes badge and caused a few dents but the car stood up well. Roland wasn’t injured, he was just a bit shaken up.

“The window didn’t shatter. The bloke who lived in the flat where it fell from came down and picked it up.”

It is not the first time a window has fallen out of the block, which sits above Page’s Schoolwear.

Last year a first floor pane fell on to Pudding Lane, although did not hit anything.

Maidstone Borough Council is yet to confirm if it has received reports of either incident.
