Woman in wheelchair dies after car mounts kerb and hits her at Maidstone Hospital

A 95-year-old woman in a wheelchair has died after a car mounted the kerb and crashed into her at Maidstone Hospital.

The red Toyota Yaris was travelling near to the birthing centre when it swerved off the road and ploughed into Jean Edith Downing.

Mrs Downing lived in Staplehurst.

She was taken to a London Hospital and her family have been told.

Police are now appealing for witnesses to the tragedy, which happened on the ring road in the hospital grounds in Barming at about 2.40pm yesterday.

The serious collision investigation unit is asking anyone who saw the collision or the vehicle beforehand to call 01622 798538 or email sciu.td@kent.pnn.police.ukquoting DS/MW/116/17.
