A second-half fightback came to nothing as Welling lost 3-0 at former Football League club Torquay on Tuesday night.

The Wings were outplayed in the first half and trailed 2-0.

They fell behind on 14 minutes when Ryan Bowman collected Courtney Cameron's through ball and rounded Lee Butcher.

Torquay should have been further ahead by the time Loui Fazakerley's foul gave Cameron the chance to double the lead from the penalty spot on 41 minutes.

Welling were the better side after the break and should have had a penalty of their own when Afolabi Obafemi's shot was handled by Angus MacDonald.

Torquay keeper Martin Rice then denied Harry Beautyman before Fazakerley hit the post following a run up the right.

Welling hopes were ended, though, with Tony Ajala adding Torquay's third inside the area on 67 minutes.

Two superb saves from Rice denied Jamal Fyfield a consolation as Welling suffered their first Vanarama Conference defeat of the season.
