Maidstone's British Senior champion Zane Cheeseman named player and development coach of the year at Kent LTA awards

Maidstone's Zane Cheeseman was a double winner at the Kent LTA awards evening.

Cheeseman won the player-of-the-year award at the Tudor Park Hotel after a 2022 that saw him lift five senior titles, including British champion in the 40s' singles and 35s' doubles at Wimbledon, play in the Kent County Cup team that were runners-up in the over 35s' national title in Eastbourne and win the captaincy for GB's over-45s at the World Team Championships in Turkey.

He was also named development coach-of-the-year for his work with Horsmonden Hotshotz.

Bearsted Tennis Club's Gabby Chidwick was part of the Kent ladies' winter cup triumph for a fifth year in a row, earning her and her squad-mates the team-of-the-year award.

Canterbury's Ruben Harris was named as one of two junior players of the year. Aspiring Paralympian Harris, who trains at Canterbury Tennis Club, Whitstable LTC and the University of Kent, won three gold medals in the National Schools Games and Represented Team GB’s juniors at the World Team Cup.

Bromley's Eloise Newberry was also junior player of the year.

University of the year went to the University of Kent who are now thriving on a new four-court indoor facility, having had no facilities for a year.

Junior team of the year were Kent boys’ under-18s team - the national champions - which included Canterbury's Alexis Chastang, Ben Gusic‐Wan, Sebastian McDonnell Palomares and Michael Pickering and Gravesham Tennis Club's Timothy Viding.

Deal Parochial Primary School took the president's award for initiatives including free tennis leader training, an outreach club for former pupils, and combined education and sport with a science project.

They also entered a countywide science, technology, engineering and maths competition, organised a charity tennis marathon, supported a former pupil's fundraising efforts and joined the Kent LTA's competitions committee.

There was more to celebrate with Daniel Hodgson's voluntary work at Deal Parochial recognised with the Rising Star award.

Hodgson, a second-year undergraduate and an accredited level 2 tennis coach, provided invaluable help with Year 6 pupils, competitions, events, trips, camps and publicity.

Whitstable LTC took home a “tennis-for-all” award. The club run an expanding disability programme which includes an outreach programme to care homes for those living with dementia and to a local day centre for adults with learning difficulties.

Vanessa Webb, of the Whitstable club, was also selected official of the year. She delivered more than 100 tournaments as a referee in 2022 and worked at 10 week-long events as a court supervisor.

Emma Nelson of Oakwood Tennis Club in Crayford was named volunteer of the year.

Instrumental in implementing and championing an inclusive tennis session for a group of disadvantaged people - The Peppercorns - she introduced charity events and Macmillan coffee mornings.

She has secured the hosting of county cup events for the past two years, too.
